The festival in Mayiladuthurai

You got to forgive the hosts of many a Natyanjali if the stage and its environs looks like a wedding hall that has been decorated over the top!

Most hosts love decorating the stage.

And that is a real shame because many venues are naturally so beautiful - sculptures, pillars, arches and gopurams in the far back.
All you need to do is to light these up well and the effect can be magical.

The Sri Mayuranathar Temple in Mayiladuthurai ( Mayavaram of old) is one such beautiful temple ( seen in the photo here) ; see it from across its famed tank, with the main gopuram rising into the sky and you realize the fantastic work of the Chola times.

The MayuraNatiyanjali festival is held at this temple every year by a Trust of residents of this busy town.

This year, the dance fest is on from Feb.10 and closes at dawn on Feb.14, long after the Sivaratri celebrations of Feb.13 night.
