Dancing at the temple in Thiruvalangadu

A Chola-era temple in Thiruvalangadu, Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple comes to our attention - it is well known as one of the five dance spaces of Lord Shiva.

Chennai-based Bharatanatyam guru Sheela Unnikrishnan tells us that for a few years now her team organizes a Natyanjali festival on Sivaratri night at this well known temple, which is outside Chennai city and would take a two-hour drive to get there.

Sheela's team is preparing for the 2018 edition - last week her academy had hosted its annual dance fest at the Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore, Chennai.

And then comes news in the local media that a 200-year-old tree, the sthalavriksham of this temple goes up in fire and is partly burnt.

This temple belongs to the Chola era ( seen in the photo here)  and is said to have been built in the 12th century.
